A Development of the Sufficiency Economy Community Model

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to 1) study a community model using the Sufficiency Economy
Philosophy (SEP) on a way of life, 2) find the ways to develop a community model and 3) study supporting
keys to success through a case study at Ban Plaboo, Nong Saeng Sub-District, Wapi Pathum District, Maha
Sarakham Province. The target group comprised representatives from community leaders, local parties,
local institutions, involve networks of governmental and non-governmental organizations. Qualitative data
were obtained by observation, in-depth interview, and focus group discussion. Data were analyzed by using
content analysis. The results were as follows:
Ban Plaboo was a community model by using the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP) on four basic
human needs and developed sufficiency through 3 levels including sufficiency at family (consuming only
as necessary and needed, reducing unnecessary expenditures and making a household account that is
self-reliant), sufficiency at community level (joint investments, information and experience exchange within
groups and community, doing activities together), and sufficiency at network level (creating the network to
connect with other government and non-governmental organizations for further sustainable development.
The ways to develop a community model were as follows: (1) capacity enhancement of community
leaders and local institutions, (2) supporting activities by the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP) as the
main principle in a way of life, and (3) encouraging local residents to participate in community activities.
Supporting keys to success were as follows: (1) change agent leaders in community (2) community
organization for sustainable development, and (3) partnership with involve networks of governmental and
non-governmental organizations.
