Main Article Content
Abstract
This article aims to study the different aspects of the characters in the romancenovel by differentiating their behavior. The frontier between the goodness and the badness of the characters depended on the interesting realism creation. The characters were developed and had an emotional change. The consumption society and the paternalism in Thai society were used as a framework for considering the complexity of the characters between the their own identity and the femininity expected by the society. Suai Loet Choet Sot written by Sopee Pannarai was chosen as the data of this study. The principal characters consisted of Khwanuma, Phimmanee, Thanaphop and Worawit. The result revealed that even though the characters in romance novel were often generalized; they had their own characteristics particular to this novel genre, which vary from the social change. The contradictory of the behaviour and the own identitywas also found. The character would be “good” or “bad” according to the complexconditions.
