Abstract

The objectives of the research were 1) to study the students problems at private university, 2) to
synthesize the adjustment process from the experience of students, 3) to analyze the effectiveness of
adjustment process, and the ways to use each process. The samples of quantitative studied were 1,250
students in the 2nd academic year 2016. A five-scale questionnaire was used for collecting data. The statistics
used were mean, standard deviation and discriminant analysis. For qualitative studied, the participants were
20 students in the 2nd academic year 2016. The data collected by focus group interview, Content analysis
combined with quantitative study results were used for analyzed data.
The findings were as follows: (1) The student adjustment problems at the private university were: 1)
environment, the item of highest mean was ‘The students had very less time for relaxation,’ 2) physical
necessity; the item of highest mean was ‘The student had poor nutrition food,’ 3) learning, the item of highest
mean was ‘The students didn’t understand many subjects clearly’ (2) The students at the private university,
had two patterns of adjustment: The first pattern was related to process 1 the increase of attempt and the
change of goals, and, if initial attempt of adjustment was not successful, the second pattern was involved
with the implementation of processes 2 to process 4 in accordance with such causes, process 2 frustration,
which was dealt with the process of self-control and regression, process 3 conflicts, which were about the
process of rationalization, reality confrontation, and reality avoidance, and process 4 stress or pressure, which
was about the process of the natural therapy and the mental mechanism. (3) The effectiveness of adjustment
processes were that: process 1; The three problems; environment, physical necessity and learning students
were found to be at the highest level mean of successful to adjustment. Process 2; frustration , process 3
; conflicts and process 4; stress, all of those problems were found to be at highest level mean of students
successful adjustment
The consideration of effectiveness with discriminant functions showed that the overall separation of group
successful using of each functions was statistical significance at 0.5 level
The raw score highest weighting coefficients of classification function of successful adjustment groups of
each process for decision to using were; Process 1 was the goal change (14.90) Process 2 was self-control
(8.68) Process 3 was rationalization (6.63)
