Phra Nakhon Sri Ayutthaya Province and Its Water Management System Based on Royal Initiative Project

Abstract

Phra Nakhon Sri Ayutthaya province is located near the lower Chao Phraya River and is on the low-lying area. During rainy season every year, it rains heavily so the water level in Chao Phraya River increases. Then, the lower area near the river is affected by great flood. Similarly, local people, working places, industrial manufacturing factories, agricultural business, and important historical & tourism places are affected as well. Therefore, water management system has to be reconsidered. Monkey Cheek Project, which was initiated by King Bhumibol Adulyadej is the perspective option to deal with the flood problem. This royal project was aimed to reduce water flow velocity before draining it. Phra Nakhon Sri Ayutthaya province chose this project. As expected, both medium and big-sized flood problems were successfully solved. Agricultural products were not that harshly affected before taking measures and agricultural farms were newly established, too.
