Abstract
สถิติ (Statistics) หมายถึง วิธีการหรือเครื่องมือทางด้านข้อมูลเชิงปริมาณในเรื่องใด ๆ ซึ่งมักจะมีการรวบรวมโดยมีวัตถุประสงค์บางประการ เช่น เพื่อศึกษาดูประสิทธิภาพ ของสิ่งใด ๆ ก็ตามการบันทึกข้อมูลไว้สำหรับการเปรียบเทียบหรือสำหรับบันทึกข้อมูลเรื่องราวในเชิงสาธารณะ ซึ่งข้อมูลเหล่านั้นสามารถนำมาวิเคราะห์ได้ด้วยเทคนิควิธีการที่หลากหลาย เพื่อทำให้ได้ความรู้ความเข้าใจใหม่ ๆ จนกระทั่งกลายเป็นสารสนเทศ (Information) ที่มาจากข้อมูล (Data) เพื่อนำไปใช้ในการวางแผน การตัดสินใจ รวมถึงใช้เพื่อการกำหนดนโยบาย ทั้งภาครัฐ และภาคเอกชน สถิติสามารถนำไปใช้สื่อความหมายให้เกิดความเข้าใจกับผู้ต้องการใช้ข้อมูลให้เป็นประโยชน์ต่อการดำรงชีวิตผ่านกระบวนการวิเคราะห์ ประมวลผล โดยหลักการทางสถิติศาสตร์ สาขาวิชาทางด้านสถิติศาสตร์นับเป็นสาขาที่ถือว่ามีความยากและมีความซับซ้อน ในการศึกษาอยู่พอสมควร อาจจะดูเป็นไม้เบื่อไม้เมากับนิสิต นักศึกษาโดยทั่วไปส่วนการวิจัย (Research) หมายถึง การค้นหาคำตอบสำหรับคำถามบางข้อโดยใช้หลักฐานเชิงประจักษ์
