Efficient Teaching Strategies for Improving English Reading Skills of EFL Learners in the 21st Century

Abstract
This article presents efficient teaching strategies for improving English reading skills of EFL learners
in the 21st century. Reading skill is one of four skills in English learning therefore teaching activities using effective reading strategies can promote reading for learners. Effective reading strategies that are commonly used in teaching are Know, Want to Know and Learn Plus (KWL-Plus), Question-Answer Relationships (QARs), Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DR-TA) and Reciprocal Teaching (RT). The current education focuses on students' 21st century skills: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity including life skills, career and information and technology skills. Thus, the integration of the 21st century skills with blended learning using the internet as a medium, the learners can learn without limitations and gain more learning opportunities. Learners can learn and share information rapidly. New learning that integrates online tools into a regular classroom such as Padlet, Canva, or Google Classroom, and so on can help learners learn more efficiently and effectively. If the instructors integrate reading strategies and blended learning instruction into online tools, they can motivate learners to change their roles from passive learning to active learning which is the key of learning in the 21st century.
