Enhancing Grade 11 Students’ Ability to Construct Scientific Explanations through Science–Technology–Society (STS)-Based Instruction
Main Article Content
Abstract
This action research aimed to 1) study the scientific explanation ability of Grade 11 students on the topic of plant growth regulation and plant responses through Science, Technology, and Society (STS)-based learning management; and 2) investigate the awareness of Grade 11 students after learning through the Science, Technology, and Society (STS) approach in a special small-sized school in Mueang Maha Sarakham District, Maha Sarakham Province. The research instruments consisted of: 1) four STS lesson plans with a total of 12 instructional hours; 2) a subjective test on scientific explanation ability comprising four situations, with three questions for each situation, totaling 12 items; and 3) a five-point rating scale awareness assessment covering three dimensions, with five items in each dimension, totaling 15 items. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and percentage.
The findings revealed that students’ scientific explanation ability continuously improved after the implementation of STS-based learning. In the first action cycle, 33.33% of the students met the criterion, while 66.66% did not. In the second and third action cycles, 100% of the students met the criterion. The proportion of students at a good level increased from 0% in the first cycle to 33.33% in the second cycle and 44.44% in the third cycle. This indicates improvement in all components of scientific explanation ability. In addition, the results of the awareness assessment after STS-based learning showed that students had a high level of awareness in all dimensions. The highest mean score was found in the behavioral dimension, followed by the emotional and feeling dimension, while the cognitive dimension had the lowest mean score.
