Abstract
Thai Economy and ASEAN : Economic and Trade Relations, Past-Present
During 1956-1965, the amount of Thailand trade to Southeast Asian countries was second only to the amount of Thailand trade to Japan and other Asian countries. By 1970-1976 after the establishment of ASEAN, the amount of Thailand trade to Singapore and Malaysia was still lesser than the trade with Japan and the U.S. Exports to Thailand have been predominantly rice, rubber, maize, tin, cassava, sugar, shrimp, and teak, etc. Thailand exported rice to the five original ASEAN countries at a very high volume, that was about 50 percent. During 1985-2000, Thailand traded most with Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, respectively, and imported from Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia respectively.
Intra trade of the former 5 ASEAN countries was low during 1970-1981; that is less than 20 percent due to high trade barrier. The latest figure in 2009 showed that ASEAN traded with each other only at 24.5 percent. Intra ASEAN investment during 1998-2008 was not high, either in terms of volume and proportion compared with total foreign direct investment. In 2009, Thailand. export to ASEAN was only 21.3 percent while the export to non-ASEAN was 78.7 percent. Thailand, of the same year, imported from ASEAN only 20 percent while imported from non-ASEAN for 80 percent. Thai investment in ASEAN countries had been predominantly in timber, gas, oil, coal, aquatic animal and hydroelectricity.
