Abstract
The Behavior and Impacts of Using Facebook of University Students in Bangkok
The objectives of this research were to study the benefits, behavior, and impacts of using Facebook of university students in Bangkok. The data were collected from ten different private and public universities amounting to seven hundred samples. The results showed that the majority of the respondents were female (60.3%) at the age of 18-19 years old (37.4%), with the average grade point average (G.P.A) of 2.51–3.01. Overall, 70.1% of the respondents used Facebook every day. The majority of them used Facebook for up to two hours, preferably through mobile phones (67.6%) in their spare time. It was also found that the purposes of using Facebook at a very high frequency were online chats with friends and congratulating friends on multiple occasions with an average score of 3.51 and 3.36 respectively (out of the total score of 5). Additionally, the use of the like button to impress friends, updating personal status, updating news, contacting old friends, commenting and creating photo albums, these activities were found at a high frequency of use. The highest benefit that the majority of the respondents received from using Facebook was receiving up-to-date information with an average score of 4.16. In terms of the impacts of using Facebook, the majority of the respondents stated that these were: arguments, fights or disagreements with boyfriend/ girlfriend; arguments and disagreements with friends; and lowering their academic performance to the average score of 1.66, 1.59 and 1.46 (the maximum score of 3). The results also showed that up to 42.1% of the respondents were affected in terms of academic performance at the level of sometimes up to often. Besides, 36.2% of the respondents were unable to submit assignments in time and 28% of the respondents were scolded for using Facebook in class. Moreover, up to 23.7% of the respondents got physical injury from accidents such as bumping into other people or falling over from using Facebook.
