Abstract

This academic article aims to 1) examine the undesirable characteristics of leaders or executives with toxic leadership; 2) identify and understand what bad leadership characteristics are and what impacts they will have on organizations or society; and 3) propose useful organizational management guidelines that will lead to development and adaptation in the face of toxic leaders or executives. The conclusion of the analysis clearly indicated that there were four phases to surviving under toxic leadership: 1) choosing to stay or leave, 2) considering confronting or avoiding, 3) seeking support from the boss or other powerful individuals, and 4) looking for companions within the organization. For future solutions, the criteria for holding positions should be set, and clear expectations should be expressed. It was important for leaders and followers to continuously examine their behaviors.  In particular, followers should control their reactions to avoid becoming victims of toxic leaders.
