A STUDY AND DEVELOPMENT OF A TWO-DIMENSIONAL MINI-GAME TO ENHANCE BASIC MATHEMATICS SKILLS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNERS

Abstract

This research aimed to 1) develop a two-dimensional mini-game to enhance basic mathematics skills in early childhood students, 2) evaluate the quality of the developed mini-game, and 3) compare the basic mathematics skills of children before and after using the developed mini-game. The sample consisted of twenty-one students aged 3-4 years from the Waeng Nang Subdistrict Municipality Child Development Center, Maha Sarakham Province. The participants were purposively selected to correspond with the lesson content on counting numbers from 1 to 10. The research instruments included 1) Stakeholders’ needs assessment questionnaire, 2) a two-dimensional mini-game to enhance basic mathematics skills, 3) a quality assessment form for the mini-game evaluated by experts, and 4) a pre-test and post-test of children’s basic mathematics skills. Data were analyzed using mean, percentage, standard deviation, and paired-samples t-test. The results revealed that the developed a two-dimensional mini-game had an overall good level of quality, with an average score of 4.35 and a standard deviation of 0.60. The comparison of children’s basic mathematics skills before and after the intervention showed that the mean pre-test score was 5.86 (58.57%), which was at a moderate level. Following the implementation, the mean post-test score increased to 9.19 (91.90%), indicating substantial improvement. The statistical analysis (t = 6.49, p < .05) showed that the difference between the pre-test and post-test scores was statistically significant at the .05 level. Therefore, the developed a two-dimensional mini-game effectively enhanced the basic mathematics skills in early childhood students.
