Early Childhood Literacy: Challenges in the Digital World

Abstract

The objectives of this academic article are to 1) promote knowledge and understanding of early childhood literacy in the digital age to parents, early childhood teachers, and the people involved in child development, and 2) suggest literacy development in early childhood that combines the use of technology in a balanced way and is appropriate for the age of the child. Understanding early childhood literacy is crucial in laying the foundation for learning in a child's life, especially in the digital age, which presents both challenges and new opportunities. Nowadays, children have access to various forms of information and media through the internet and digital devices. While such access can potentially enhance learning skills, it can also lead to distractions, time management issues, and health concerns if not managed properly. Parents and teachers play a vital role in selecting age-appropriate media, considering safety and content quality, to ensure children benefit maximally from digital media usage. Utilizing digital devices and applications that enhance children's reading and writing skills while maintaining supervision is essential to prevent overreliance on technology, which could hinder independent literacy skills. Limiting screen time is crucial in preventing excessive gaming or video watching, which can negatively impact health and learning behaviors. In the digital age, learning should be a blended approach, integrating digital media with hands-on activities and interactions with others to foster holistic development in both academic and social skills.
