The Effect of Educational Game Activities from Local Materials on Preschool Children’s Basic Mathematical Skills, Ban Thung Yai School, Buriram Province

The purpose of this research was to compare preschool children’s basic mathematical skills before and after implementing the educational game activities from local materials. This research used a quasi-experimental design. The population in this research were 35 preschool children, boys and girls, aged 5-6 years, studied in two Kindergarten 3 classrooms in the first semester of the Academic Year2021 at Ban Thung Yai school, Buriram province. The samples were 17 preschool children from Kindergarten 3/1 selected by using cluster random sampling, choosing one classroom from two classrooms, all classrooms were similar. Due to the COVID-19 situation, the school was closed down and the researcher was unable to implement activities at school. Therefore, the researcher implemented the activities for these preschool children at their home following the social distancing measures. Twelve preschool children were chosen according to those whose parents were ready and convenient. The researcher conducted the experiment using one group pretest-posttest design. The research instruments were 24 educational game activities from local materials lesson plans and preschool children’s basic mathematics test. The researcher took the samples to do a pretest for a period of 1 week and implemented educational game activities from local materials for 6 weeks, 4 days a week with 30 minutes per day, 24 times in total. The samples were then taken to do the test after the experiment for 1 week. Statistical data were analyzed to verify the hypothesis by using mean, standard deviation, and compared before and after implementing educational game activities from local materials on preschool children’s basic mathematical skills using t-test.
The research results revealed that after implementing educational game activities from local materials, preschool children had higher basic mathematical skills than those of before the experiment at the statistical significance level of .05.
