Wisdom and Creative Processes in The Banana Leaf Craft of Kru Srimui Muangyos

Abstract

This ethnographic qualitative study investigates the body of knowledge and traditional wisdom underlying the banana-leaf craft of Kru Srimui Muangyos, with specific attention to the creative processes she employs and her perspectives on the preservation and transmission of this cultural heritage. The primary informants included Kru Srimui Muangyos, her students, and colleagues, totaling 15 participants. Data were collected through document review, observation, and in-depth interviews, and they were analyzed using content analysis with triangulation to ensure credibility.

The findings indicate that her expertise reflects local artistic heritage and ways of life characterized by meticulous craftsmanship, self-sufficiency, and the sustainable use of natural resources. Her creative process demonstrates the integration of Thai traditional wisdom with artistic practice, spirituality, and close engagement with nature through systematic planning, design, and execution, thereby upholding traditional values while enabling technical innovation. Her views on cultural transmission further underscore a commitment to safeguarding Thai identity through hands-on, practice-based learning. Overall, the study provides a concise framework for the preservation and contemporary development of Thailand’s banana-leaf craft tradition.
