Guidelines for reducing car accidents and the study of accident causation factors

The objectives of this research were to study factors contributing to car accidents and to determine guidelines for reducing the accidents. This research was the documentary research on car accidents. The data was collected from paper-based Thairath Newspapers from 2008 to 2017, by recording the number of cars, car types, and factors affecting car accidents.The statistics used in the data analysis were frequency, percentage, and mean. Then, the data acquired content analysis to find ways to reduce car accidents. The study found that from 2008 to 2017, there were a total of 3,805 vehicles of all car accidents. There were 1,389 passenger vehicles, followed by 1,277 cars. Most of the factors affecting accidents were the behavior of motorists, followed by the factors affecting physical accidents. As a result from the data analyses, the guidelines for reducing car accidents are as follows: 1. cultivating knowledge about self-defense and skills of motorists is a solution to the problem, 2. publicity of road safety information, especially information about road conditions, lighting and weather conditions, is a solution to the problem, 3. awareness-raising is a solution to the problem of motorists’ negligence, and 4. law enforcement is a solution to the problem caused by drivers’ non-compliance with traffic laws and their failure to take care of their vehicles’ condition.
