The use of readymade objects and synthetic materials in contemporary art provides opportunities to create new meanings from familiar materials and forms, particularly when they are combined with religious imagery, leading to new interpretations and questions about established meanings and values. This creative project aims to study how signs communicate meaning and how readymade objects and synthetic materials affects the aesthetics of Buddha image presented as installation art, using a semiotic approach. The study found that readymade objects and synthetic materials used to create balloon-like Buddha images communicate meanings and generate aesthetic impacts in two aspects: sensory perception, which leads to religious meanings and ideals, and deconstruction, which encourages critical reflection. In terms of sensory perception, the imagery and visual elements––including form, color, light, texture, volume, quantity, installation, and spatial arrangement––convey concepts of liberation, detachment, arising, existence, and dissolution, associated with Buddhist ideals. In terms of deconstruction, the balloon form, which signifies mass culture, and the synthetic elastic material, a readymade product of modern industry, challenge and destabilize the sacred status of the Buddha image. Through a semiotic decoding of the underlying binary opposition between the sacred and the ordinary, the work leads to a process of critical reflection that reveals the myths surrounding the status and meaning of the Buddha image and relates them to the aims and ideals of Buddhism.
