Various types of houses exist in Northeastern Thailand; however, contemporary designs for such houses have not been systematically proposed in academic research. This study aims to review existing bodies of knowledge about Isan housing from 1987 to 2020, using both primary data from interviews among academia and architects concerning the identity of Isan houses, and secondary data drawn from academic publications. Based on the qualitative approach, it was found that most design-related concerns focused on architectural features. The interview further revealed that 1) physical creation and designs (such as the gable, the outside space leading to the inside area, and construction materials) can clearly been perceived and noticed, 2) abstract creation can result in feelings (for example simple and modest) through forms and designs, 3) “Isan” identity has been redefined, reidentified, and reinterpreted, and 4) greater emphasis has been placed on ways of life than on architectural forms. Based on the findings, this study recommends moving beyond the simplicity and modesty traditionally associated with Isan architecture by revitalizing local knowledge and wisdom through a social science perspective on cultural identity. This approach encompasses four aspects: 1) norms and adaptations shaped by local surroundings and strong ancestral beliefs; 2) multicultural society of the locals who share same cultures and values; 3) contemporary individual and community perceptions; and 4) distinctive local cultures shaped by both traditional and newly-created ways of life. The findings can serve as a foundation for further academic research on Isan architecture and provide practical guidance for the design of contemporary architectural projects.
