Adapting traditional Thai musical knowledge to contemporary contexts through innovative ensemble formation and new musical arrangements is essential for sustaining Thai music and aligning it with present-day musical contexts. This research, entitled “The creation of a performance style for Thai string quintet ensemble”, aims to compose a Phleng Homrong (overture) and develop a performance style for a Thai string quintet ensemble consisting of Saw Duang, Saw U, Saw Sam Sai, Saw Sam Sai Leep, and Saw Sam Sai U, the last of which was developed to provide the bass foundation for the ensemble. The study employed a qualitative research methodology including a literature review, expert interviews, and performance experimentation, followed by data analysis and synthesis to establish performance guidelines. The findings reveal that the ensemble represents a novel configuration with a balanced distribution of high, middle, and low registers. The instruments are organized into two functional groups: 1) leading instruments, comprising Saw Duang and Saw Sam Sai Leep (high register) and Saw Duang and Saw U (two-string instruments), which carry the main melodic line; and 2) following instruments, comprising Saw U and Saw Sam Sai (low register) and Saw Sam Sai and Saw Sam Sai Leep (three-string instruments), which provide harmonic support. The Saw Sam Sai U provides rhythmic accents, including cadential and upbeat figures, enhancing musical expression and maintaining overall sonic balance. The performance emphasizes parallel fourth harmony, canon techniques, call-and-response phrasing, and solo passages in the third section. This study bridges traditional Thai musical wisdom with contemporary creativity, contributing new knowledge to musical composition and ensemble integration, with potential applications in music education and the development of contemporary Thai music ensembles.
