บทคัดย่อ

เส้นทางรถไฟสายไทย-พม่า หรือทางรถไฟสายมรณะ (Death Railway) มีความสำคัญอย่างยิ่งในทางประวัติศาสตร์และในฐานะของความเป็นมรดกทางวัฒนธรรม แหล่งทางประวัติศาสตร์บางแห่งบนเส้นทางรถไฟนี้ได้รับการพัฒนาให้เป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวบ้างแล้ว ในขณะที่ยังมีแหล่งที่มีคุณค่าและความสำคัญอีกมากมาย จึงเป็นที่มาของการศึกษาหาแนวทางในการพัฒนาและสื่อความหมายแหล่งท่องเที่ยวแห่งใหม่บนเส้นทางรถไฟสายมรณะนี้ อันมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อทำการสำรวจแหล่งทางประวัติศาสตร์ที่ยังไม่ได้รับการพัฒนาให้เป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวทางวัฒนธรรมเพื่อวางแผนการตีความและสื่อความหมายมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมของแหล่งต่างๆ นี้ ให้เป็นที่เข้าใจและรู้จักมากขึ้นในหมู่คนไทยและชาวต่า่งชาติ ผ่า่นการพัฒนาให้เ้ป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวทางวัฒนธรรมแบบยั่งยืน โดยในการศึกษานี้การวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพได้ถูกนำมาใช้ใ้นการศึกษาด้วยเทคนิควิธีการสัมภาษณเ์ชิงลึก, การสนทนากลุ่มและการสังเกตุการณ์แ์บบมีส่วนร่วมกับกลุ่มตัวอย่าง 5 กลุ่มในระหว่างการทำงานเก็บข้อมูลภาคสนาม เพื่อที่จะสำรวจและศึกษาถึงคุณค่าของแหล่งประวัติศาสตร์ต่างๆ รวมถึงหลักในการพัฒนาแหล่งนั้นๆ และการมีส่วนร่วมของชุมชนในการพัฒนาผลการศึกษาทำให้ทราบว่ากลุ่มตัวอย่างส่วนใหญ่ต้องการให้เกิดการพัฒนาและตีความแหล่งท่องเที่ยวแห่งใหม่และพร้อมที่จะมีส่วนร่วมในการพัฒนาโดยเชื่อว่าการท่องเที่ยวจะเป็นการสื่อความหมายมรดกวัฒนธรรมที่ดีวิธีหนึ่งส่วนจะมีการจัดการการท่องเที่ยวทางวัฒนธรรมอย่างไรนั้นขึ้นอยู่กับว่า่เราต้องการตีความและสื่อความหมายเรื่องใด พร้อมทั้งได้ทราบถึงแหล่งประวัติศาสตร์ที่สมควรได้รับการพัฒนามากที่สุดจำนวน 6 แหล่งและเหตุผลสนับสนุนในด้านคุณค่า ความสำคัญทางมรดกวัฒนธรรมและสิ่งที่ต้องการสื่อความหมายส่วนรูปแบบในการพัฒนาและสื่อความหมายให้เป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวทางวัฒนธรรมแห่งใหม่นั้น สามารถนำเอาหลักการพัฒนาแหล่งท่องเที่ยววัฒนธรรมที่เน้นการมีส่วนร่วมของชุมชนเข้ามาใช้ในการวางแผน ซึ่งงานวิจัยนี้ได้ตอบโจทย์และร่วมวางรากฐานการมีส่วนร่วมของชุมชนเอาไว้แล้ว จากการให้โอกาสชุมชนเข้ามาแสดงความคิดเห็นถึงแหล่งต่างๆ ที่สมควรได้รับการพัฒนา สิ่งสำคัญในการวางแผนการพัฒนาคือการสืบค้น บันทึก ตีความและสื่อความหมายคุณค่าและความสำคัญทางมรดกวัฒนธรรมของทั้ง 6 แหล่ง โดยการใช้เทคนิคต่างๆ ในการสื่อความหมายซึ่งล้วนเป็นสิ่งจำเป็นในการเล่าประวัติศาสตร์เส้นทางรถไฟสายมรณะให้เป็นที่รู้จักมากขึ้น

Abstract

The Thailand-Burma Railway, which is commonly known as the ‘Death Railway’, has a very highcultural significance, especially in historical value. Although there have been several sites developed astourist attractions, there are still many significant places that can be developed along the railway. The studyof Guidelines for Interpretation and Development of New Tourism Destinations along the ‘Death Railway’took place to survey these potential sites, as well as to find means to interpret these sites to be more knownamongst Thai and international tourists via sustainable cultural tourism management. A qualitative researchmethod is used in the study with 5 sample groups. The techniques of in-depth interview, group-discussionand participant observation are used during the field research to find a list of these sites, its significance,development’s planning and local’s participation.The results show that the sample groups would like to develop 6 sites as new tourism destinationsand are willing to cooperate in the management from the beginning. They also believe that developing thesesites for cultural tourism is one of the best means to interpret this heritage. The cultural tourism managementplan depends on which story will be interpreted and need a further study and discussion. They also illustratethe heritage significance and meaning of each site.Principles in sustainable cultural tourism development can be used in the development’s planning aswell as principles in local stakeholders’ participation. For that matter, this study has gathered their opinionson the most likely sites. The most important concerns during the planning are to record, research, surveyand interpret the heritage significance of all six sites. In doing so, using several techniques in interpretationwill be an appropriate proposal. All these techniques used shall make the heritage significance of the ‘DeathRailway’ better known.
