Discourse practice in the Traveller’s Companion Magazine : An Ethnography of Communication Approach -

Abstract

This article presents results related to an analysis of discourse practice. The researcher adopted Ethnography of Communication as concept to analyze the relationship between language and communication context in the Traveller’s Companion Magazine between 1987 and 2016. total 360 copies.  It was found that the production of Traveller’s Companion Magazine process goes through a screening by the editorial team. Apart from providing information about tourism directly, manufacturers have created and presented ideas that are beneficial for selling their advertising. These context published through one-way communication with a semi-formal language. The content is presented in a persuasive manner, not coercive or subjective making the reader feel comfortable. It also includes statistics, numbers, references, interviews, etc. In terms of process of Interpretation, Consumers inferred that the magazine’s context were standard knowledge. The receivers have less travel information than the messenger who has power over the receiver group. Therefore, the ideology that appears in the Traveller’s Companion Magazine was accepted and trusted by receivers
