The Development of a Curriculum to Enhance Thai Reading Competency by Using Literature-Based Approach for Grade 4 International School Students

Abstract

The objective of this research was to develop the curriculum for enhancing Thai reading competency using Literature-Based Approach for grade 4 International school students and to study the results of the implementation. The Target group was grade 4 enrolled in Thai Class semester 2 the Academic year 2020 – 2021 at Cranberry International School in Lampang province. Research tools were the developed curriculum and the Thai reading competency test. The result found that there was the curriculum to enhance Thai reading competency which was composed of 5 learning units: Unit 1 Introducing Thai literature, Unit 2 Ready for reading, Unit 3 Power of reading, Unit 4 Reading as communication, Unit 5 Reading in real life. The constructed curriculum has a suitable average, at high level (gif.latex?%5Cbar%7Bx%7D = 4.24, S.D. = 0.54). The learning units and lesson plans have a suitable average, at high level (gif.latex?%5Cbar%7Bx%7D = 4.09, S.D. = 0.78). The results of the implementation were that the student’s posttest scores were higher than pretest scores (gif.latex?%5Cbar%7Bx%7D = 12.33, S.D. = 6.28), (gif.latex?%5Cbar%7Bx%7D = 26.00, S.D. = 2.28).
