Proficiency, Instructional States and Needs of Media Use for Studying English of the Second-Year Naval Cadets

Abstract

The objectives of this research were 1) to study English proficiency of second-year naval cadets by considering the overall average and the average of each aspect; 2) to study the naval cadets' opinions towards English instructional states in terms of objectives, content and teaching time, instructional procedures, use of teaching media, and measurement and evaluation and 3) to survey the needs of media use for studying English of the second-year naval cadets. The population was 89 second-year naval cadets studying English for Communication II during the first semester of academic year 2021. The research instruments were 1) an English proficiency test 2) a questionnaire on English instructional states and 3) a questionnaire on the needs of media use for studying English. The statistics used in the data analysis were percentage, mean and standard deviation. The results of the research showed that 1) the average scores of English proficiencies of the second-year naval cadets were at fair level. When considering each aspect, it was found that the average score of grammar ability was the highest with a fairly good level, followed by vocabulary ability which was at a fair level and the listening part was the lowest with a very poor level. The naval cadets' opinions towards English instructional states were at a high level. When considering each aspect, it was found that instructional procedures had the highest average at the highest level, followed by teaching objectives at a high level, and the use of English instructional media had the lowest average at a fair level. As for the needs of media use for studying English of the second-year naval cadets, YouTube was ranked first with the highest level, followed by Podcasts at the highest level and the last one was a mockup.
