Musical Culture of Pa-O Ethnic in Mae Hong Son of Thailand

Abstract

The objective of this research is to study the history, way of life, music culture, and musical knowledge in social and cultural dimensions by using ethnomusicology study. The results of fieldwork data gathering revealed that the Pa-O ethnic group is a minority in Myanmar. Immigrated to Thailand and settled in 3 main communities in Mae Hong Son province. They also speak the Pa-O language and wear ethnic clothing that reflects the legends of their ancestors. Moreover, they hold Buddhism in high regard. The Twelve traditions ceremony which the Thong me Java, Mong, Chae, Ching, and Ya kang instruments were discovered to play a significant role in traditional ritual ceremonies and The Kiw Lai performance. In addition, we found the singing in Nyao Tag song and Nyao Kae song, a folk song that uses Pa-O language to convey the way of life, history, and political dispute. With the incorporation of the Ka Ya instrument into the Nyao Tag song. In aspects of the socio-cultural dimension, the Pa-O people are attempting to maintain and pass along their culture by recreating culture on important days. For the purpose to create their own identity and maintaining their culture to prolong.
