Digital Identity and Authentication

In Thailand, the new Royal Decree on the Supervision of Regulated Digital Identification, Authentication and Verification Service Businesses B.E. 2565 (2022) provides a regulatory framwork for identity proofing and authentication. However, the decree does not address the concept of digital identity, which is a broader and more complex topic. This article will explore the differences and connections between identity proofing, authentication and digital identity, as well as the legal challenges and opportunities they pose. Currently, most online identity verification in Thailand relies on centralized databases maintained by government agencies. There is no clear framework for decentralized identity solutions, which could offer more privacy and control to users. Morever, there is a lack of cross-border recognition and interoperability of digital identity systems, which could hamper the development of ditital trade and services.
