A Buddhist Psychological Approach to Enhance Elderly Understanding of Depression
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research aims to 1) explore the Buddhist psychological approach to communication, 2) study depression in the elderly, and 3) apply Buddhist psychological communication techniques to enhance the understanding of depression in the elderly. Additionally, it seeks to enable caregivers and close individuals to incorporate these methods into their daily lives effectively. The study emphasizes the application of Buddhist psychology principles to enhance the knowledge and understanding of elderly individuals experiencing depression, given the significance of this issue. Effective use of these principles by caregivers or close individuals can foster essential emotional support and understanding, aiding in managing depressive symptoms in the elderly. The research primarily employs document analysis, utilizing primary sources such as the Tipitaka, commentaries, and Buddhist scriptures relevant to Buddhist psychology and mental healing. Secondary sources, including academic articles, research studies, and books on depression and Buddhist psychology, were also reviewed.
The research found that 1) understanding the processes of the mind enhances effective communication, starting with mindfulness training, emotional regulation, careful word choice, and the ability to conclude conversations positively. This approach fosters constructive communication, reduces conflict, and builds long-term positive relationships. 2) Elderly individuals often face depression due to physical decline, the loss of loved ones, and isolation, which may manifest as physical symptoms such as fatigue or aches. Caregivers are encouraged to understand the complexities of elderly depression, avoid harmful words, and promote engaging activities that foster relaxation. Despite its complexity, depression is highly treatable with proper care. 3) Applying Buddhist psychological principles in communication—using gentle, compassionate speech—helps elderly individuals feel cared for and supported. This strengthens their confidence in coping with depressive emotions and challenges. Additionally, caregivers benefit from these principles by gaining a deeper understanding of depression and managing issues with mindfulness, enabling more effective support for the elderly. The application of Buddhist psychological approaches not only enhances the emotional stability and well-being of elderly individuals but also strengthens caregiver-elder relationships. While implementing these approaches may require caregivers to acquire knowledge and adapt over time, the outcomes significantly improve the quality of life for both elderly individuals and their caregivers in the long term.
