Scopus Indexing Evaluation and Enhanced Submission Guidelines

The editorial board of the Asian Interdisciplinary and Sustainability Review (AISR) would like to inform our contributors, readers, and the wider academic community about the outcome of our recent application for indexing in Scopus.

 

On July 8, 2024, AISR was submitted for evaluation by Scopus. We have now received the results of this evaluation. While AISR was not accepted for indexing at this time, we received valuable feedback from the Content Selection & Advisory Board (CSAB) regarding areas for improvement. Specifically, the CSAB has suggested improvements to citation performance, article quality, and the connection of our published work to international literature and debates. The CSAB has indicated that AISR may be resubmitted for consideration in January 2027. In light of this feedback and our commitment to enhancing the quality and international standing of AISR, the editorial board is implementing the following enhanced submission guidelines, effective immediately. These guidelines are designed to ensure that AISR is well-positioned for future consideration by Scopus and continues to serve as a valuable platform for scholarly research.

 

Revised Submission Guidelines:

To ensure the highest standards of quality and relevance, all submissions to AISR, particularly those intended for publication from this point forward, must adhere to the following criteria:

  1. Scope Adherence:Submissions must strictly align with the journal's scope, focusing on interdisciplinary approaches to sustainability and sustainable development. Articles falling outside this scope will be immediately rejected, and authors will be notified with a recommendation of alternative Association of Legal & Political Studies (ALPS) journals that may be more suitable for their work.
  2. Length and Referencing:Articles must be at least 5,000 words in length and include a minimum of 15 references. At least one-third of these references must be to articles published in Scopus-indexed journals in relevant fields and/or on related topics. The "Conclusion and Discussion" section must clearly engage with and discuss these references.
  3. Academic Quality:Submissions must demonstrate a high level of academic rigor, presenting clear, compelling, and useful/applicable new insights. Articles should connect with and contribute to the broader body of knowledge, at least at the regional (Asian) level.
  4. Timely Revisions:Authors must complete all required revisions and receive final acceptance from the editorial board within one month of receiving the peer review results from at least three reviewers.

 

Consequences of Non-Compliance:

  • Scope Violations (Guideline 1):Articles that do not meet the scope requirements will be rejected by the Handling Editor in the initial screening stage.
  • Quality and Referencing Issues (Guidelines 2 & 3):Articles that do not meet the quality and referencing requirements will not be accepted for publication.
  • Revision Deadline (Guideline 4):If revisions are not completed within the one-month timeframe, the Handling Editor will reject the submission. Authors may resubmit the article for consideration but will be required to pay a resubmission fee of 3,000 THB (reduced from the standard 5,000 THB) at the time of resubmission. Upon acceptance, the standard publication fee of 5,000 THB will apply.

 

Rationale:

These policy changes are designed to:

  1. Strengthen the rigor of our review process and maintain high standards for published articles.
  2. Enhance the quality and international relevance of AISR, ensuring that our content contributes meaningfully to global scholarly conversations.
  3. Increase the rejection rate to more accurately reflect our commitment to quality and selectivity.

These changes reflect our commitment to improving the journal while maintaining our philosophy of providing opportunities for knowledge dissemination. We believe that these enhanced guidelines will help us achieve our goals and better serve the academic community.

  • Special Article Processing Charge (APC) Waiver for International Authors (2025-2027)

    The Asian Interdisciplinary and Sustainability Review (AISR) is committed to fostering global collaboration and disseminating high-quality research on sustainability across diverse geographical contexts. In line with this commitment, and in response to Scopus recommendations regarding the geographical diversity of authorship and content, AISR is pleased to announce a Special Article Processing Charge (APC) Waiver for all international authors for submissions made and accepted for publication between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2027.

    This initiative is designed to remove financial barriers that may prevent researchers from outside of Thailand from publishing their work in AISR. By waiving the APC for international authors during this period, we aim to:

    • Increase the geographical diversity of research published in AISR:We believe that a broader range of perspectives and experiences will enrich the journal's content and impact.
    • Support researchers in low-resource settings:By removing the APC, we hope to enable researchers from around the world to share their valuable findings with a wider audience.
    • Enhance the quality and impact of sustainability research:We believe that collaboration and knowledge sharing are essential for addressing the complex challenges of sustainability.

    Eligibility:

    • This APC waiver applies to all manuscripts submitted by corresponding authors affiliated with institutions located outside of Thailand.
    • The waiver is valid for manuscripts submitted and accepted for publication between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2027.

    AISR encourages researchers from around the globe to submit their high-quality research to the journal during this special waiver period. We look forward to receiving your submissions and contributing to a more sustainable future.

  • ALPS Enhances Quality and International Standing of its Journals

    The Association of Legal & Political Studies (ALPS) is committed to continuously improving the quality and impact of its journals. As part of this ongoing commitment, ALPS submitted its journals for indexing in leading international databases such as Scopus and Web of Science (WoS).

    While initial evaluations did not result in immediate acceptance for all journals, ALPS received highly positive and constructive feedback from both database providers. The feedback emphasized a few key areas for improvement, which ALPS has diligently addressed across its journal portfolio.

    These areas primarily concern further strengthening the quality of published articles, enhancing the international scope of cited literature, and more explicitly connecting articles to global scholarly debates within each journal's respective field.

    To meet these requirements and to elevate all ALPS journals to a new level of international excellence, ALPS is implementing the following enhancements:

    • Website Updates:We have thoroughly updated key information on each journal website, including the About the Journal, Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement, and Instructions for Authors, aligning them with international best practices for scholarly publications.
    • Revised Review Form (Version 3):We are implementing Version 3 of our robust Article Evaluation Form, building upon the strengths of the previous version and incorporating specific recommendations from database evaluators. This enhanced form will enable reviewers to more effectively assess and guide submissions towards achieving higher quality and greater international relevance in their respective subject areas.

    These enhancements are designed to benefit all stakeholders:

    • Authors:The elevated standards will encourage authors to prepare higher-quality manuscripts, and the detailed feedback provided through the revised review process will facilitate significant improvements to accepted articles.
    • Reviewers and Editors:The updated Review Form provides a more structured and targeted framework for evaluating manuscripts and offering constructive feedback, leading to a more efficient and impactful review process.
    • Readers and the Scholarly Community:These enhancements will ensure that published articles are of the highest quality, contributing valuable insights and advancing scholarly discussions within their respective disciplines.

    These initiatives will improve each journal's readiness for evaluations by national (TCI) and international (Scopus and WoS) databases and provide the tools needed to elevate the published research to the highest standards.

  • Asian Interdisciplinary and Sustainability Review – Web of Science Indexing Application Update

    The Association of Legal & Political Studies (ALPS) wishes to inform its stakeholders of an update regarding the application of the Asian Interdisciplinary and Sustainability Review (AISR) for inclusion in the Web of Science (WoS).

    AISR was initially submitted for WoS indexing consideration on July 30, 2024. Recently, ALPS received notification that AISR has not passed the Web of Science Editorial Triage step. The Web of Science Editorial Team identified the following areas for improvement:

    1. Website Functionality/Journal Format: The journal website lacked a direct link to the Association of Legal & Political Studies (ALPS), the publisher. To ensure transparency, the inclusion of this link was deemed necessary. Additionally, the available ThaiJO user manuals for authors and reviewers were only available in Thai, while the journal publishes in English.
    2. Presence of Ethics Statement: The existing Publication Ethics statement was considered to overlap with those of other publishers (e.g., Elsevier). A revised, in-house developed statement was recommended to demonstrate the journal's understanding and ownership of its policies and processes. Furthermore, citations to external guidelines (e.g., COPE, WAME, etc.) required direct links to the referenced documents.

    In response to this feedback, ALPS has implemented the following revisions to the AISR website:

    1. A direct link to the ALPS website (as well as to White Tiger Legal Business and Research Consultants Co., Ltd., the Co-publisher) has been added to the "Ownership and Management" section of the "About the Journal" page.
    2. Given the absence of official English-language ThaiJO user manuals for authors and reviewers, the link to the Thai-language ThaiJO manual has been replaced with a link to the English-language Open Journal Systems (OJS) documentation provided by the Public Knowledge Project (PKP) of Simon Fraser University, from which the ThaiJO manual was translated.
    3. The Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement has been entirely rewritten, drawing from the journal's existing policies and practices, with updated information and comprehensive citations and links to relevant resources.

    With these improvements now complete, ALPS intends to resubmit AISR for a second round of consideration by Web of Science on May 1, 2025. We appreciate the ongoing support of our authors, reviewers, and readers as we work towards achieving this important milestone.

  • Acceptance/Rejection Rates for 2024

    The acceptance/rejection rate serves as one of the most widely recognized indicators for assessing the quality of an academic journal. The editorial team of the Asian Interdisciplinary and Sustainability Review (AISR) acknowledges the necessity of transparency in journal publishing and has been gathering, analyzing, and disclosing this information since 2023. In the year 2024, a total of 30 articles were submitted for review, of which 23 were accepted for publication and 7 were rejected. Consequently, the acceptance rate for articles submitted to AISR in 2024 is 76.67%.

  • Enhancing the Quality of AISR by Clearly Identifying the Contribution, Novelty, and Position on Sustainability of Each Submitted Article

    The Asian Interdisciplinary and Sustainability Review (AISR) has been assessed and certified by the Thai Journal Citation Index Center for inclusion in the TCI database, categorizing it in Tier 1 (the highest tier) for the evaluation of journal quality within the TCI database, Round 5, effective from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2029, the journal aims to further elevate its quality in preparation for assessment by international databases such as Scopus and WoS. Therefore, the editorial board requires that every article submitted for consideration for publication in AISR must clearly identify the "contribution" and "novelty" of each article in at least two sections: 1) at the end of the "Abstract" and 2) at the "Conclusion and Discussion" section. This should be presented as a narrative rather than as separate subheadings. Additionally, each article must demonstrate a clear position on "sustainability" or "sustainable development." This may be explicitly stated in the title and content of the article or linked in a way that is easily recognizable and consistent with the title and scope of the journal. Articles that do not comply with this requirement may be asked to make revisions before the editor assigns them for review by external reviewers. Furthermore, if, at the final stage, the editor-in-chief finds that the authors have not sufficiently addressed these elements, those articles may ultimately be rejected for publication in AISR. The judgment of the EIC shall be final, and authors will not be able to request a refund of the article processing charge.

  • Announcement of Increased Article Processing Charges for Articles in AISR

    As AISR has been assessed and certified by the Thai Journal Citation Index Center for inclusion in the TCI database, categorizing it in Tier 1 (the highest tier) for the evaluation of journal quality within the TCI database, Round 5, effective from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2029, the Association of Legal & Political Studies (ALPS) has decided to adjust the article processing charges. This adjustment aligns with ALPS's policy regarding publication fee rates for the association's journals and reflects the increased costs incurred (for instance, the reviewer compensation has increased from 800 baht for Tier 2 journals to 1,000 baht for Tier 1 journals). Furthermore, this adjustment aims to enhance the efficiency of journal management. The editorial board, therefore, announces an increase in the article processing charge for articles in AISR from 8,000 Thai Baht to 10,000 Thai Baht, matching the fees of other Tier 1 journals within ALPS. This new fee will be applicable for articles for which the article processing charge is paid from February 5, 2025, onwards. ALPS will continue its policy of providing fee reductions and waivers for editorial board members and academic networks that have formal collaborations with the association, especially for authors from low-income countries, to promote opportunities for the dissemination of their academic works as before.

    Asian Interdisciplinary and Sustainability Review values measuring the journal's quality by acknowledging and referencing articles published in the journal to expand the academic community's knowledge. Therefore, AISR monitors the number of times its articles are cited by articles published in journals indexed in national and international databases.

    In 2020-2023, articles published in AISR were cited in journals whose index in Scopus totaled 113 times, while AISR published 49 articles during the same period. Therefore, its CiteScore for 2023 is 2.31. As of December 31, 2024, the CiteScore tracker 2024 (Q4) will likely decline to 2.26.

    In 2022-2023, articles published in AISR were cited in journals whose index in TCI totaled 67 times, while AISR published 28 articles during the same period. Therefore, its impact factor for 2023 is 2.39. As of December 31, 2024, the IF tracker 2024 (Q4) will likely decline to 1.88.

  • AISR 2024 Peer Review Metrics

    Submission to First Decision: Manuscripts are reviewed by the editorial team, assessed for quality by peer reviewers, and the editorial team sends the first decision back to the authors so that they can improve the quality according to suggestions (if any), including formatting as required by the journal. This takes approximately 41.61 days.

     

    First Decision to Acceptance: The authors have improved the quality of the manuscript according to the recommendations of reviewers, and formatted it as specified by the journal until it is complete and accurate according to the journal's standards, including being accepted for publication in approximately 42.70 days.

     

    Acceptance to Publication: The production process after the manuscript has been accepted and published takes approximately 9.13 days.

     

    The operational efficiency of AISR's editorial team in 2024 is much better than the previous year. The original time spent throughout the process from article submission to publication was 162.10 days, reduced to only 93.43 days. However, the editorial team is committed to reducing the time period to comply with the editorial team's policy that from article submission to acceptance should not take more than 45 days. The editorial team will try to gradually reduce the time period in the article review process by reviewers to no more than 28 days by 2025 and no more than 14 days by 2027.

  • Changing the article sorting format from “page numbers” to “article number”

    In order to accommodate the increasing volume of articles in the journals under the responsibility of the Association of Legal & Political Studies (ALPS), the association has decided to change the article sorting format of all journals (AISR, ACSR, APSR, AAMR, AELR, & TISR) from “page numbers” to “article number” as used in the case of Procedia of Multidisciplinary Research (PMR), starting from the first issue of 2025 onwards.

     

    The format of writing article citation information according to the format of the American Psychological Association (APA), 7th edition, is as follows:

  • Acceptance/Rejection Rates for 2023

    This is because the acceptance/rejection rate is one of the most popular indicators used to consider the quality of a journal. The Asian Interdisciplinary and Sustainability Review (AISR) editorial team recognizes the importance of transparency in journal publishing and has collected, analyzed, and disclosed such information starting in 2023 onwards. In the year 2023, there were 18 articles submitted for consideration. There were 14 articles accepted for publication. There were 4 rejected articles. Therefore, the AISR article acceptance rate for 2023 is equal to 77.78%.

  • Guidelines for detailing human research ethics in research articles

    According to the Association of Legal & Political Studies (ALPS), the Institutional Review Board (IRB) has been established to consider and approve human research ethics for the research projects of the association's researchers and external researchers. From now on, all research manuscripts that will be submitted to be considered for publication in the association's journals, research must be given importance and conducted in strict accordance with ethical standards for human research.

    All research articles involving human subjects should receive human research ethics approval from a human research ethics committee of a reputable agency. Those articles must include details of human research ethics certification, including the name of the certifying agency and committee and the certification number. For research articles that have not previously received human research ethics approval, detail the conditions for exemption from approval and the procedures the researcher has used to ensure that the research complies with the ethical standards of human research must be clearly stated. All these details, both in certified and non-certified cases, are set out in the Research Methodology section.

    The editors may consider and decide to reject any submissions that do not provide these details, especially those that may not comply with ethical standards for human research.

  • AISR 2023 Peer Review Metrics

    Submission to First Decision: Manuscripts are reviewed by the editorial team, assessed for quality by peer reviewers, and the editorial team sends the first decision back to the authors so that they can improve the quality according to suggestions (if any), including formatting as required by the journal.     Acceptance to Publication: The production process after the manuscript has been accepted and published takes approximately 26.7 days.

    The operational efficiency of AISR's editorial team in 2023 is considered to have dropped somewhat from the previous year. Previously, it used to take only 59.11 days for the entire process from submission to publication, increasing to 162.1 days. The editorial team has therefore set a goal to reduce the time in the second step, from first decision to acceptance, to within 30 days only.

    Submission to First Decision: Manuscripts are reviewed by the editorial team, assessed for quality by peer reviewers, and the editorial team sends the first decision back to the authors so that they can improve the quality according to suggestions (if any), including formatting as required by the journal. This takes approximately 22.61 days.

    First Decision to Acceptance: The authors have improved the quality of the manuscript according to the recommendations of reviewers, and formatted it as specified by the journal until it is complete and accurate according to the journal's standards, including being accepted for publication in approximately 24.28 days.

    Acceptance to Publication: The production process after the manuscript has been accepted and published takes approximately 12.22 days.

    AISR aims to improve the work process in the future to be more efficient, intending to reduce the time from submission to acceptance from 46.89 days in 2022 to within 45 days, in line with the editorial board's policy. The editorial team will try to improve the work process in the future to be more efficient by trying to expedite the editing of articles by authors to no more than 14 days.

  • PSAKUIJIR will change its title to AISR from Vol.12 No.2 (July - December 2023)

    In order to improve the scope of PSAKU International Journal of Interdisciplinary Research (PSAKUIJIR) to be more specific and clearer in line with databases policies, relevant to the interests of the academic community, and most useful to readers, the editorial board decided to change the title to Asian Interdisciplinary and Sustainability Review (AISR) from Vol.12 No.2 (July-December 2023).

    Under this new title, the journal will focus on interdisciplinary research and review articles relevant to Asia, including comparisons between countries in the region and other regions, and take a clear stance on sustainability and sustainable development.

  • PSAKUIJIR will change its peer review model to open peer review in the second half of 2022:

    Perspectives on the peer review process have shifted from anonymity between authors and reviewers as a means of preventing bias to transparency to allow members of the academic community to jointly review the process. As a result, we found that many of the world's largest and most well-known publishers such as Springer Nature, Frontiers, MDPI, and BMJ have all switched their traditional review models to open peer review.

    Therefore, in order to make the article quality assessment process of PSAKUIJIR more efficient, we have decided to change the peer review model of articles submitted for publication in our journal to open peer review from Vol. 11 No. 2 (July-December 2022) onwards. This means that the names of the handling editor, reviewers, and authors will be disclosed to each other throughout the review process. Also, the name of the handling editor and reviewers will also be mentioned in the article once it has been published.
