Fish Market Status in Phrae Province
Fish markets in Phrae province are small because there are not many local residents and tourists in this area and most villagers raise fish for their own consumption. As a result, there is less demand for imported fish which means there are not many fish products coming into Phrae markets annually. The fish market status of Phrae Province was researched during February, 2008-January, 2009. One hundred and thirteen questionnaires were dispersed in 30 markets all over 8 sub-districts of the Phrae province. Results of the questionnaires showed that there were two main aquatic animal groups sold in Phrae markets which included both freshwater and marine fish. The percentage of freshwater fish and marine fish production was 52.49 and 47.51, respectively. But the ratio of freshwater and marine fish wholesales was 95.68% and 4.32% respectively. Tilapia, catfish, rohu, snakehead, and channel catfish were the main freshwater species found in Phrae markets. On the other hand, shrimp, cuttle fish, shellfish, and marine fish were the main marine aquatic products sold in Phrae markets. Tilapia is the main economical fish that is sold in Phrae; its sales consisted of approximately 37.24% of all aquatic animals sold. However, 89.28% of tilapia was imported from other areas. This updated information is beneficial for fish culture planning to support fish consumption needs or improve culture efficacy in order to reduce energy cost for fish transportation from long distances.
