การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ (1) ศึกษาความเป็นมาและบทบาทของท้าวเวสสุวัณ (2) วิเคราะห์บทบาทและรูปแบบของท้าวเวสสุวัณในสังคมและวัฒนธรรมไทยตั้งแต่อดีต-ปัจจุบัน และ (3) สังเคราะห์สถานภาพในปัจจุบันของบทบาทของท้าวเวสสุวัณที่ปรากฏในสังคมและวัฒนธรรมไทย โดยใช้วิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ

ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ท้าวเวสสุวัณมีบทบาทในสังคมและวัฒนธรรมไทย ทั้งในระดับราชสำนักและประชาชนทั่วไป โดยมีบทบาทใน 3 ฐานะ คือ ในฐานะโลกบาล ในฐานะเทพแห่งความมั่งคั่ง และในฐานะผู้พิทักษ์พระพุทธศาสนาและพุทธสถาน บทบาทดังกล่าวมีการปรับเปลี่ยนให้สอดคล้องเหมาะสมกับวิถีชีวิตในสังคมปัจจุบัน โดยบทบาทในฐานะผู้พิทักษ์พระพุทธศาสนาและพุทธสถาน นิยมสร้างเป็นรูปเคารพขนาดใหญ่ในท่ายืน อยู่ในตำแหน่งสองข้างของทางเข้าพุทธสถาน ซึ่งพบว่ามีรูปลักษณ์ทั้งที่ถูกต้องตามแบบแผนและปรับเปลี่ยนไปบ้างตามความคิดของผู้สร้าง สำหรับบทบาทในฐานะโลกบาลและเทพแห่งความมั่งคั่ง นิยมการสร้างวัตถุมงคลที่เป็นรูปท้าวเวสสุวัณในรูปแบบและขนาดที่สะดวกในการพกพาติดตัว รูปแบบของวัตถุมงคลที่พบส่วนมาก ได้แก่ รูปเคารพขนาดเล็กแบบหล่อลอยตัวในท่ายืนหรือท่านั่ง เหรียญรูปท้าวเวสสุวัณและผ้ายันต์รูปท้าวเวสสุวัณ ในส่วนของการบูชาพบว่ามีแนวปฏิบัติที่เป็นไปตามความเชื่อของ  ผู้เคารพนับถือท้าวเวสสุวัณ

Abstract

This research aims to study the background and role of the Thao Vessuvan in order to analyze the roles and forms of  the Thao Vessuvan in Thai socio-cultural life from past till present and synthesize current status of the Thao Vessuvan roles appeared in Thai socio-cultural life by using qualitative research methods. 

Study results suggest that the Thao Vessuvan has played important roles in Thai socio-culture life since early days of Kingdom of Thailand to date, whether at royal level and general public. There are 3 roles of the Thao Vessuvan including keeper of the world, protecting against all dangers; god of prosperity, providing wealth and fortune and guardian of Buddhism and Buddhist monastery, preventing evil intrusion into Buddhist monastery or harm to Buddhists. All three roles of the Thao Vessuvan are rooted in Thai socio-culture life with adaptation to current lifestyle in society. As seen from his role as guardian of Buddhism and Buddhist monastery, big statues in standing position enshrined in both sides of Buddhist temple entrance are generally built in formal and deviant appearance, according to creators. The Thao Vessuvan roles, keeper of the world and god of prosperity, are mostly crafted as sacred objects in convenient-to-carry forms and sizes. Most forms of sacred objects that were discovered include small casted sculpture floating in standing or sitting posture, Thao Vessuvan medallion and Thao Vessuvan talisman. In respect of worship, practices found to be in accordance with people’s beliefs in the Thao Vessuvan.
