Abstract

Abstract

Any research on learning and teaching of second language or foreign language usually refers to the concept of the Universal Grammar based on the nativist approach led by Noam Chomsky (1959,1980,1981,1986). The concept is based on the assumption that a child can learn his/her native language, due to his/her innate knowledge. The Universal Grammar has been initially applied to explain the process of learning a first language and later has been developed in connection with other theories into a new approach to studying a second language.

The research will provide an overview of how the Universal Grammar concepts can be applied to the learning and teaching of second language with a view to widening the perspective on all possibilities of their applications to the learning and teaching of foreign languages.
