Abstract


This paper pursues the following objectives. Firstly, the usefulness of literature in modern foreign language teaching will be discussed. Secondly, the paper outlines the difficulties one encounters while learning and teaching German modal particles. Thirdly, a method, how to teach German modal particles in a creative and stimulating way through literature, will be introduced. A complete teaching unit of three hours based on the children’s novel “The thief lord” by Cornelia Funke will be presented. The focus is on the creative and intuitive approach to modal particles which is considered to be more beneficial to the student’s needs compared to the method of learning modal particles through glossary.
