Abstract
This article aims to explore the readings in Thai language textbooks for lower secondary level students based on The Basic Education Core Curriculum B.E. 2551 supervised by Office of the Basic Education Commission, Ministry of Education. The study indicates that students’ desirable characteristics are presented through situations or characters in the readings. These desirable characteristics depicted in the readings are love of nation, religion, and monarch; honesty; discipline; yearn for learning; self-sufficient living; commitment to works; pride of Thainess; and public conscious mind in accordance with those imposed by Ministry of Education. The result of the study concludes that the readings in the Thai language textbooks play a vital role as a teaching material in improving learners’ moralities apart from explaining Thai grammatical principles and their usage. Therefore, teachers could implement the stories or characters in the readings as a model to develop the students’ desirable characteristics.
