A Contrastive Analysis of Spanish and Thai Discourse Organizers in Explanatory-Expository Texts

Abstract
This research article is a study of the use of Spanish and Thai discourse organizers in explanatory-expository texts applying the criteria from Martín Zorraquino and Portolés (1999), which classifies discourse organizers into 3 subgroups, namely ordering markers, comment markers and digressive markers. The objectives of this study are (1) to analyze the differences or similarities in the use of discourse organizers in Spanish and in Thai in terms of the items used and their frequency, and (2) to compare meanings and functions of Spanish and Thai discourse organizers. The corpus used for this study consists of 50 popular science articles, of which 25 are from Muyinteresante magazine and another 25 from NSTDA’s Sarawit magazine. In total, 27 discourse organizers are studied, 18 of them are Spanish and 9 are Thai.
