Reflections of Social Problems in the Novels Just Want My Little One Not to Cry and The Boy in the Trash Pile

Abstract

This research article explores reflections on social problems in the novels Just Want My Little One Not to Cry and The Boy in the Trash Pile, written by Utain Promdaeng, and published by Intrend Publishing (2022 - 2023). The study employs a social problems framework for analysis, using a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings reveal that Utain’s novels reflect six social issues: (1) family problems, incliding divorce, violence against children, child sexual abuse, and child abandonment; (2) issues within educational institutions that overlook children’s problems; (3) corruption and misconduct in political and administrative institutions; (4) exploitation of children by foundations meant to protect them; (5) the failure of religious institutions to serve as a refuge for people; and (6) the psychological and moral decline of individuals in society. The author uses the characters’ behaviors and somber, distressing scenes to emphasize these social problems more vividly.
