Abstract
คงไม่เกินจริงนักถ้าเราจะกล่าวว่า “คำสัญญาเมื่อครารุ่งสาง” คือคำประกาศความรักของนักประพันธ์ที่ยิ่งใหญ่ผู้หนึ่งที่มีต่อมารดาของตนผ่านตัวอักษร ผลงานชิ้นนี้จัดอยู่ในกลุ่มงานประพันธ์ประเภทอัตชีวประวัติ (l’autobiographie) แม้ว่าผู้ประพันธ์มิได้ยอมรับหนักแน่นนัก แต่ต้องถือได้ว่าคู่ควรกับการได้รับพิจารณาในฐานะงานวรรณกรรมแนวอัตชีวประวัติที่ดีที่สุดชิ้นหนึ่งในศตวรรษ
ที่ ๒๐ นอกจากจะทำหน้าที่เป็นเอกสารบอกเล่าการเติบโตผ่านช่วงเวลาต่าง ๆ ในชีวิตของผู้เขียน ตามหน้าที่ที่งานประพันธ์แนวอัตชีวประวัติที่ดีพึงมี ผลงานชิ้นนี้ยังเปรียบเสมือนอนุสรณ์แห่งความรักที่มารดาคนหนึ่งมีต่อบุตรของตน และการสำนึกพระคุณของบุตรชายต่อมารดา
