Developing Developing Skills in Designing Islamic-Integrated English Learning Units to Enhance Learners’ Competencies According to the Wasatiyyah Approach through a Professional Learning Community (PLC)
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research article focuses on the development and design of Islamic-integrated English learning units to enhance the competencies and identities of Muslim learners based on the Wasatiyyah (moderate) path through the Professional Learning Community (PLC) process. The objectives were to: 1) develop skills in designing and managing Islamic-integrated English learning units to enhance learner competencies according to the Wasatiyyah approach via PLC, and 2) design Islamic-integrated English learning units that promote holistic learner competencies—comprising knowledge, skills, and morals—clearly reflecting Muslim identity and the Wasatiyyah path. The research sample consisted of 10 English language teachers from schools in Pattani Province, obtained through purposive sampling. The research instruments included surveys, focus group discussion records, learning unit and lesson plan critique forms, satisfaction assessment forms, teacher reflection logs, instructional supervision forms, and feedback records from the professional community. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation, while qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis.
The research findings revealed that the trainees successfully developed their skills in designing and managing Islamic-integrated English learning units. They were able to design units that effectively promoted comprehensive learner competencies in knowledge, skills, and ethics, clearly embodying Muslim identity and Wasatiyyah principles. The satisfaction assessment of the trainees toward the development of these learning units through the PLC process in Pattani yielded an average score of 4.72, categorized at a "very good" level. This approach effectively addressed the challenges faced by 40% of the teachers who previously lacked the design skills and understanding required to integrate English content with Islamic principles according to the Wasatiyyah path. Furthermore, the design process resulted in a set of 5 learning units comprising 15 topics, emphasizing competency-based and active learning. These units were evaluated by experts as having the highest level of appropriateness, with a mean score of 4.80.
