An Analysis of the Identity of Pu Man Tattoos at Wat Phumin Towards Driving the Creative Economy of Nan Province
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article aims to analyze the identity, patterns, and semiotic meanings of the Pu Man tattoos appearing on the murals of the ordination hall at Wat Phumin, Nan Province, in order to propose a management concept for transforming vanishing cultural capital into a sustainable creative economy ecosystem. Grounded in the theory of functional semiotics and the concept of cultural economics, the analysis reveals that the Pu Man tattoos serve as a "spiritual DNA" that reflects historical ethnic assimilation and power structures. The semiotic structure is clearly divided between the upper body, featuring red tattoos that signify sacredness and ethical capital, and the lower body, featuring black tattoos (Sak Kha Lai) that symbolize endurance and the power to control supernatural forces. In the dimension of the creative economy, the identity of the red tattoos on the Pu Man's body acts as a unique selling proposition (USP) and a deep cultural code that responds to the symbolic consumption behavior of contemporary consumers. Consequently, this article proposes the creation of a "Digital Living Heritage" leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and 3D modeling to revive traditional knowledge and systematically drive the grassroots economy in accordance with World Heritage city standards.
