Development of Chinese culture and language skills through Role-playing activities in Business Chinese course for Students at International College, Dhurakij Pundit University

Abstract

     This experimental research aimed to achieve the following objectives: 1) Develop Chinese cultural and language proficiency among third-year students enrolled in the Business Chinese Program through role-playing activities. 2) Asses the learning achievements in Chinese culture and language. 3) Investigate the satisfaction levels of third-year students in the Business Chinese Program regarding their improved abilities in Chinese cultural understanding and language usage through role-playing activities. The study involved a sample of 69 third-year students enrolled in the ZH202 course focused on Chinese cultural understanding and language usage. The sample selection was carried out using purposive sampling.The research utilized the following instruments: 1) lesson plans for the ZH202 course in Chinese cultural understanding and language usage. 2) Chinese cultural and language proficiency tests. 3) A questionnaire aimed at exploring student satisfaction with role-playing activities in the ZH202 course. Data analysis was conducted using percentages, mean, standard deviations, and one-sample t-test.

          The study yielded the following results: 1) The scores on Chinese culture and language proficiency tests exceeded the criteria for a good level of proficiency. 2) Posttest scores for student’s learning achievements in Chinese cultural understanding and language usage after completing the ZH202 course were significantly higher than criteria (sig.= .000, t=15.535*).  3) Overall satisfaction levels with the course were rated at the highest level (gif.latex?\bar{x} = 4.59, S.D. = 0.54. Satisfaction levels were further categorized into three aspects: instructor (gif.latex?\bar{x}= 4.62, S.D. = 0.49), learning activities (gif.latex?\bar{x} = 4.56, S.D. = 0.50), and students (gif.latex?\bar{x} = 4.42, S.D. = 0.61)
