An Analysis of Word Formation and Connotation in Racism Films : A Case Study of Green Book and The Butler

Abstract
This research aimed to 1) analyze word formation and connotation in racism films : a case study of Green Book and The Butler and 2) compare the word formation and connotation in racism films between Green Book and The Butler. The samples consisted of 23,026 words and 3,820 sentences in Green Book and The Butler. The research applied the word formation theory of Yule (2010) and the connotation theory of Leech (1981) to analyze the data. Meanwhile, frequency as a basic statistic was used to accumulate the result numbers. The results were found that the most commonly 55 words of derivation and 39 sentences of connotation were found in Green Book; meanwhile, the most commonly 142 words of derivation and 14 sentences of connotative were found in The Butler. A comparison of two films was found that more numbers of connotation were found in Green Book than in The Butler. On contrary, more new words of formation were found in The Butler.
