Guidelines for Teaching English to Generation Z Students

Abstract
Today's learners were born in an era known as "Generation Z." It is a time when the world has advanced in technology. Therefore, they grew up in an environment where technology was essential to their daily lives. This has an impact on their personal characteristics and learning styles, which are different from those of learners in the previous generation. Also, it affects teaching and learning management, especially teaching English as a foreign language in Thailand. Conventional teaching methods may not be suitable for the changing context of learners. Teachers should be aware of the importance of such issues, and take them into account in the design of the teaching and learning process. Performing activities that are in line with the learners’ aptitudes, abilities, and interests will make lessons meaningful, develop their language potential and motivation to study, help them realize the benefits of learning English, and eventually lead to their success in learning.
This article, hence, aims to share knowledge with English teachers about Generation Z learners in terms of their characteristics and learning styles. It also presents guidelines together with examples of applying such knowledge that will help promote effective English language instruction.
