Aesthetical concept in Khon

case study of Ban Rak Thai institude Chiang Mai province

Abstract

The Objective of the thesis is to study the concept of the aesthetics in Khon: Case Study of Ban Rak Thai Institute in Chiang Mai Province. The scope of the study covers topics such as the beauty of an actor or actress, the beauty of the costumes, the beauty of the dance, the beauty of narrative and dialogue, the beauty of music and the instrument the gamelan which is traditionally used.

            The Objective of the thesis is to study the concept of the aesthetics in Khon: Case Study of Ban Rak Thai Institute in Chiang Mai Province. The scope of the study covers topics such as the beauty of an actor or actress, the beauty of the costumes, the beauty of the dance, the beauty of narrative and dialogue, the beauty of music and the instrument the gamelan which is traditionally used. The methodology used is documentary research and interviews with nine people.

The study result was found the following, the beauty of an actor or an actress is following tradition and an appreciation of the characters. The beauty of the costumes which are fully decorated and accessorized to show who the character are. The beauty of the dance, the actor and an actress has to act following a dialogue to show how the characters feel and what is happening in that time. The beauty of the narrative and dialogue since the actor and an actress are wearing masks that make it impossible for them to speak as a result a ventriloquist needs to do the actual dialogue and in perfect voice with precise and beautiful language. The beauty of the music and the gamelan must relay the rhythm and tone of the narrative to make the audience understand the ambient feeling.

The Aesthetic concept found in Khon is preserved by following the tradition in order to the perfect of overall image. That is to say Khon is a national treasure that must be preserved for future generations.
