A Perspective towards Natural Disasters in Thailand during 1867 – 1926

The study aims to look for worldviews about natural disasters in Thai society from 1867 to 1926. It can be divided into 3 periods. Firstly, before 1867, the worldviews about natural disasters in Thai society is related to: the ideas about the establishment and collapse of the city or place; the idea about the merit of the ruler or the merit beliefs to supernatural and religious mysteries; and economic and social policies of the state which cause people to misunderstanding natural phenomena as a threat. Consequentially, people did not want to manage and minimize lost from those natural disasters. Instead, they accept, adjust themselves to the situation and respect for natural disasters. It can be argued that people during this period believed in supernatural power above and beyond human interference. Secondly, during 1867 to 1916, the world perspective about natural disasters started to influencing Thai society such as knowledge from modern geography of the West. People in Thai society have been trying to find knowledge that is reasonable enough to explain the natural disaster phenomenon. These two distinct beliefs come at the same period became a clash between the traditional worldviews and the new worldviews. However, natural disaster is still not a major problem that needs to be solved very quickly in Thai perspective at this second period. Lastly, during 1917 to 1926, government agencies turned their attention to natural disasters which affected the economy. Bringing knowledge along with the worldviews of new natural disaster idea to use and publish makes people understand better about natural disasters in a more rational manner. The result is that the state and people in society have been trying to control the natural disaster in more seriouse manner than the past.
