An Analysis on the Phra Chabbaggiya’s Role towards The Disciplines Enacted by The Lord Buddha

Abstract

The objective of this research was aim to analyses of the  Phra Chabbaggiya’s roles  towards disciplines enacted by the lord Buddha in Theravada  Buddhist’s scriptures. It was a documentary research. The result of research was found that in the Buddha’s time there were six men-friends namely Pandhuka  Lohittaka  Mettiya Bhummajaka Assaji and Punabbasuka. They spent live  as  farmer. They planted a monkhood as an assistance in school of two highest monks beaus of the lack of proper’s. After that they liked to group altogether so called “Chabbaggiya”.

There were two kinds of roles according to Phra-chabbaggiya for the disciplines enacted by the lord Buddha which called the primary  and the secondary  cause. In all 227 disciplines enacted by the lord Buddha, there were 128 disciplines as primary causes belonging to  Phra-chabbaggiya  categories as 3 Sanghadisesa, 12 Nissaggiyapacittiya, 40 Pacittiya, 1 Patitesaniya and 72 in Sekhiya. Only 2 in Parajikka were a secondary causes. Phra-chabbaggiya and their followers had no role only in Aniyatakandha.

By the personal and group role side, it found that there were four personal roles,  the role of Mettiya and Bhummajaka in 3 disciplines i.e. the eight and the ninth of Sanghatisesa and thirteenth of Pacittiya, and 1 role of Assaji and Punabbasuka in thirteenth Sanghatises. 

In the name of the group, Chabbaggiabhikkhus played an important role for enacting 126 divisions of disciplines, i.e., 2 Parajikas, 12  Nissaggiyapacittiyas, 39 Pacittiyas, 1 Pathitesaniya and 72 Sekhiyas. All were regarded as both primary and secondary enacted causes.

By the role of the group, it was certainly divided that the group of Chabbaggiybhikkus in Savatdhi enacted 115 disciplines, the group in Rajagaha enacted 4 disciplines, the group in Vesali and Sakka state enacted 3 disciplines, and the group in Alavi enacted 1 discipline.
