Grinding a Needle into a Bar : A Political Philosophical Reinterpretation of Thai Politics.

Abstract

This academic article presents a synthesis of key political philosophers’ ideas reinterpreted metaphorically, with a particular emphasis on the context of Thailand. The author creatively reverses the traditional Thai proverb “turning an iron bar into a needle” to “grinding a needle into an iron bar”, in order to reflect the complexity—and at times, the irrationality—of political rhetoric. The article aims to critically examine concepts of rights, liberty, and equality, drawing on the perspectives of prominent thinkers such as Plato, Aristotle, John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Karl Marx. The central objective is to analyze how these philosophical frameworks can deepen our understanding of the metaphorical expression “grinding a needle into an iron bar” within contemporary Thai politics, and to highlight the enduring relevance of political philosophy as a foundation for governance and public administration.
