Abstract
Koh Kret is a unique and important agricultural site of Nontaburi; however, due to the environmental and socio-economical change, the life of agriculturalists is highly affected. To preserve this important agricultural life, the adaptation of agricultural pattern to sustainable agricultural management is necessary. The objectives of this research were 1) to study development of agriculture and agricultural patterns management in Koh Kret 2) to analyze and synthesize a form of sustainable approach to agricultural resources management of Koh Kret Community. The methodology used in the research is documentary research and field study with participatory observations and in-depth interviews, and the creation of a model by applying qualitative scenario building. The study found that farmers in Koh Kret have cultivated integrated farming since the pre-modern time. However, when the environmental condition had been changed, the forms of agriculture had to be adapted. The key point of transition was tourism development and effects
from natural disasters. The result also indicated that Koh Kret’s agriculture management in present days had an approach of sustainable agriculture, in integrated farming patterns. Nevertheless, it still had to encounter four major issues: 1) natural disasters, 2) market, 3) relationship between the involved partners, and 4) the lack of successors for agriculture profession. The model would be related to two key issues. The first one is crops selection for agriculture management in the natural-constraint area. The second issue is the integration of tourism to agriculture because tourism had been the main source of income for Koh Kret’s residents. To maintain the lifestyle of farmers, what needs to be done and integrated tourism to agriculture from engagement of all partners in order to continue Koh Kret’s agriculture in a sustainable way.
