A STUDY OF CHINESE-THAI TRANSLATION OF PREPOSITION PHARSES WITH RECIPIENTS TO MODIFY VERB GROUPS “dui” AND “duiyu”

Abstract
The aim of this research was to study a set of strategies utilized in translating prepositional phrases with recipients to modify verb groups, “对” and “对于”, from Chinese into Thai. The data was collected from the source that showed all Chinese language text (Source Language) and Thai language text (Target Language). The contents were analyzed to identify the relationships between structure, meaning and translation strategies. The outcomes were as follows: (1) Based on the similarities and differences between Chinese and Thai, translators tended to place objects either after or before subjects as appeared in the original texts. When the prepositions “对” and “对于” came after the subjects, translators adjusted Chinese structure into Thai structure. This was due to the differences between the two languages. However, when the prepositions “对” and “对于” preceded the subjects, most translators did not change the structure and maintain the “object elements” in front the subject which shared linguistic similarities. (2) When the prepositional phrase “对” was used to modify the verbs to describe the subject’s action done to the recipient, as well as the verbs to show the subject’s attitude or means towards the recipient, translators utilized only the reordering strategy to ensure correct meaning as in the original texts. In addition, the reordering strategy was also found by adjusting the order of presenting ideas for concise and clear communication.
