Attributes and Cost of Owning a Seven-seater Personal Car’s License Plate

The objectives of this research were to study the attributes of license plate and willing - to - pay cost of license plate with preferable attributes. Three attributes to be considered were leading digit, categorical (Thai) alphabets, number string (4 digits). A sample of 430 personal car owners was conducted by using online questionnaires distributed to various groups of target population. The data were collected from April to May 2022. Mainly, t tests F tests (ANOVA) were applied on means of preference scores. It was found that preference on the attributes of license plate didn't depend on any characteristics of car owners', neither sex, age, education, job, nor income for almost all cases. In overall, findings were 4-digits number string was the most attention part called by car owners, the categorical (Thai) alphabets and leading digit were second and third attentions respectively. This reflected in the willing-to-pay cost of the license plate if the preferable license plate attributes could be chosen. That was, if only either categorical (Thai) alphabets or leading digit allowed to be selected, the average willing-to-pay cost were 816 Baht or 518 Baht, respectively. Of course, the more attributes were chosen, the higher willing-to-pay cost would be. For instance, average willing-to-pay costs for being able to choose leading number and 4 digit number string, categorical alphabets and 4-digits number string, and all 3 attributes were respectively 1,866, 2,383 and 3,907 Baht. The findings might support the Department of Land Transport (DLT) of the Ministry of Transport in improving its tasks and services.
