An Analysis of the Syntactic Units in the Reading Text Titles in the Upstream English Textbooks for Senior High School Students

The purposes of this study were 1) to analyze syntactic units used in the reading text titles in the Upstream English Textbooks for senior high school students, and 2) to analyze the types and forms of the syntactic units used in the reading text titles in the books. Totally, there were 137 reading text titles used for this syntactic analysis, drawn from three Upstream English Textbooks of Aksorn Charoen Tat Group publisher.

Three research instruments comprised: 1) the table for the hierarchy of the syntactic units, 2) the table for the units classified by types of syntactic units and 3) the table for the units classified by syntactic forms. The content analysis method, means, and percentage were used in analyzing data. The research results were as follows: 1) The syntactic units commonly used as the title in the reading texts were phrases, sentences, words, and clauses, respectively. 2) In the study of types and forms of syntactic units used: for the types; four types of phrases commonly used were noun phrases, prepositional phrases, verb phrases and adjective phrases, respectively. Four types of sentences founded were interrogative, declarative, imperative, exclamation sentences. All words used were nouns. Similarly, all clauses used were noun clauses. For the syntactic forms; most of phrase types used could be directly classified under the framework of parts of speech, still they were some phrases formed from the non-finite verbs; such constructions commonly used were gerund phrases and present participial phrases. Sentences commonly founded could be classified in 3 forms, simple sentences, complex sentences, and a compound sentence, respectively. Every word used could be classified under the framework of the parts of speech; none of those from non-finite verbs were used. Clauses founded were those of main and subordinate clauses in complex sentences that curtain elements had been left out.
