The Gamification-Based Learning to Promote Scientific Reasoning and Learning Achievement on Electrochemistry for Grade 12 Students
Main Article Content
Abstract
The purposes of this research were to: 1) study scientific reasoning, and 2) compare their learning achievement after receiving gamification-based learning instruction with the 70 percent criterion. The sample consisted of 38 Grade 12 students. The sample used the cluster random sampling. The research instruments included: 1) four gamification-based lesson plans implemented over 12 instructional hours; 2) a scientific reasoning test comprising four situations with a total of 16 items, designed as a two-tier written-response format, in which part 1 consisted of questions and part 2 required students to provide reasoning; and 3) a 25-items four-option multiple-choice achievement test. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and one-sample t-test.
The results of the research found that: 1) after the intervention, students revealed highest scientific reasoning in Identifying Data or Evidence with 76.32 percent; followed by Drawing Conclusions with 65.46 percent; and Prediction with 64.80 percent; respectively. Overall, the mean score across all the three dimensions was 73.04 percent indicating a good level of scientific reasoning. 2) Grade 12 students who received gamification-based learning achieved learning achievement scores in electrochemistry higher than the 70 percent criterion, with statistical significance at the .05 level.
