Study on Learning Management Focusing on Real-life Situations and Questioning (Can You Find Another Word for Questioning?) for Encouraging the Mathematical Concept on Measures of Central Tendency of Grade 12 Students

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to; 1) study learning management, focusing on real-life situations and questioning to encourage mathematical concept on the Measures of Central Value of grade 12 students, and 2) compare mathematics learning achievement on the Measures of Central Tendency of grade 12 students of learning management focusing on real-life situations and questioning for encouraging mathematical concept with 60% of criterion. The participants were 41 grade 12 students in the first semester of the academic year 2019, selected by cluster random sampling from 10 classrooms. The instruments consisted of 9 lesson plans and a learning achievement test on Measures of Central Tendency. The index of item-objective congruence (IOC) of the lesson plans was between .67–1.00. The discriminant index of the test was between .45-.75. Its difficulty index was between .30-.78, and its reliability was at .86. Percentage, mean and Standard Deviation were used for analyzing the data.

The research findings revealed that the learning management comprising real-life situations regarding; a) consumption; b) personal information; and c) interesting news that associated with mathematical contents, and then, designed as learning activities with questioning for encouraging the mathematical concept by following these steps: understanding questions, analytical questions, reasoning questions, and conceptual questions. The learning achievement before learning was higher than 60% of the criterion at a .05 significance level. The average score was 13.93 or 69.65% of the total score.
