The Development of Reading for Main Idea and Learning Inquiry Behavior of Grade 3 Students Using SQ4R Activities

Abstract

The purposes of the research were; Develop ability of reading for main idea by using SQ4R activities of Grade 3 students according to 70 percent of criterion, and Explore studiousness of Grade 3 students obtaining SQ4R activities. The focus group is  grade 3 classroom with 6 students of Banlerngtai School, Tambol Lerngtai, Kosum Pisai Distric, Maha Sarakham Primary Educational Service Area Office 3. The study was conducted with the action research with 3 circles as a research method. 12-hour circle lesson plans using SQ4R activities, students’ studiousness observation form, spiral quizzes, and a test of reading for main idea ability were conducted as research instruments. The statistics used for analyzing the collected data were mean, standard deviation, and percentage. The results of the study found that: The average score on the test of reading for main idea ability for the focus group obtaining SQ4R activities was 83.33 percent, which was higher than the criterion, and also the focus group showed gain in studiousness as a whole, with 80.56 percent of average score, at excellent level.
